King Football - or Emir Football? - makes his entrance at the International Schools Niederwürschnitz - Wednesday 23.11.2022, before the start of the 9th lesson, many pupils streamed into the assembly hall. Some wore the colors black, red and gold, even though it wasn't about the revolution of 1848. We gathered for the public viewing of the German national team's opening match

As this Winter World Cup is taking place with massive disruptive noises and the reporting in the run-up to the event pointed out problems in detail, we didn't want to enjoy the whole thing without comment. We therefore adhered to one premise of the Beutelsbach Consensus: what is discussed critically must also be presented critically at school. We pointed out many critical points, of which the timing of the World Cup and the human rights situation prior to the World Cup should suffice as examples. We changed perspectives and saw, for example, that it is also the first summer World Cup for countries in the southern hemisphere. A short discussion with differentiated student statements was initiated. Just in time for the kick-off, we were then able to devote ourselves to the soccer and, despite the poor result, enjoyed the time together and the tense euphoria that could ultimately be felt.
