In addition to feeding the bees and regular colony inspections, during which the queen bee was also searched for and found, the pupils studied the topic of "bees" in theory in order to lay the necessary foundations as young beekeepers. They learned a lot of background knowledge about bee colonies and their products pollen, wax and honey and how these can be used by humans.
Apitherapy, i.e. the medicinal use of bee products, was of particular interest and so our young beekeepers made their own lip balms, ointments and sweets.
Labels were designed for the honey we harvested ourselves so that it can be sold at school events.
There was still a lot to do before the winter hive was set up and secured with a mouse grid and a thermo difference shortly before Christmas. The children learned about the function of the hives and embellished them. They diligently nailed brood and honey frames, soldered in middle walls and made thermal separators.
