Bee together - wild bees go to school!
With this project, the Stollberg Beekeepers' Association won second prize in the "GIEHT LUUS" ideas competition. In addition to setting up a wild bee habitat on the "Stollberger Tor" industrial estate with a sandarium, deadwood hedge and flowering meadow, the idea included building a wild bee hotel in the school garden of the Niederwürschnitz International Schools. The bee colony, which the GTA pupils look after together with the Stollberg Beekeepers' Association (Imkerverein Stollberg e.V.) on a weekly basis as part of the all-day "Bees" program, is also located here in the midst of a good food supply.
The nesting aid was varnished by the children during the GTA and placed in such a way that it also has a great external impact for interested parties, e.g. tenants and visitors to the allotment garden. The wild bee hotel appeals to different species of wild bees thanks to the different sized holes in hardwood and reeds. During the next fruit tree blossom, it will attract numerous wild insects, which will lay their eggs in it and can be observed in biology lessons at school, for example.
The wild bee hotel has a modular structure and was assembled and built by the children themselves. In addition to the environmental education aspect, the pupils were also trained in craftsmanship by screwing together and assembling the individual modules.
It was great fun for everyone involved!
